The January Sale

Part of Hyemin Park's Ongoing "IKEA Project"

13 - 15 January 2011

Opening Reception: Thursday 13 January, 6 - 8pm - RSVP

Getting into the spirit of the January bargain-hunt, we are pleased to present “The January Sale”, a three day project by the Korean performance artist Hyemin Park.

The project will present a series of drawings which you can buy, at heavily discounted rates, direct from the artist herself, who acts as both creator and sales assistant at the same time. The drawings all form part of Hyemin Park’s ongoing “IKEA Project”, where she recreates product images found in IKEA catalogues. Copying them faithfully onto small box canvases in pen, Hyemin creates unique artworks from mass-produced images of mass-produced objects, and then offers them for sale at the same price as in the catalogue. A drawing of a lamp may be £15.99, a wardrobe could be £299 – original artworks at mass-produced prices.

Playing with the distinctions between artwork and product, “The January Sale” is part of Hyemin Park’s larger project of exploring the distinctions between originality and mass-production, of commercial value and its relation to labour, and of different ways in which the artist can interact with her audience. Ms. Park will be present, making sales, giving discounts and processing orders, both at the opening on Thursday and throughout the duration until Saturday evening.

Originally from Seoul, Hyemin Park graduated with an MA in fine Art from Chelsea College in 2009 and has exhibited widely in the UK, Korea and Japan. Please come along and enjoy the opening sale with us on Thursday evening, 6-8pm.
