Sesame is proud to present “Past Present”, an exhibition about our love affair with the past, its stories, and its secrets. The exhibition features the work of three artists - Toby Wiggins, Guy Barton & ***** *********- and coincides with Toby Wiggins’ exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.

Winner of the BP Travel Award 2006, Toby Wiggins’ drawings are based on old family photographs from between the wars. Multi-layered, time-worn and fragile, they are much like old memories themselves, and form part of his larger body work, “Stills from an Epic Adventure”.
Guy Barton delves further back in time with paintings that rediscover and reinterpret old anthropological photographs from the colonial era, using images sourced from the archives of the British Museum. His paintings depict individuals whose personalities and stories echo across the ages.
In contrast, ***** ******** (appearing courtesy of the Cynthia Corbett Gallery) uses Old Masters paintings as inspiration for her photographic portraits, resulting in works whose contemporary figures are both created and obscured by narratives from the past.
Starting from the premise that being in touch with our past enriches the present, the exhibition looks at our how history engages our imaginations, and how we use historical stories to shape and add colour to the present. For more information and visiting details, contact Sesame.
