Seeing
a landscape involves much more than simply
viewing the
land. Memories, emotions,
excitement and trepidation – all contribute
to create the visual experience of the spaces
around us.
Sesame is proud
to present “A Mystery
About Places”, a visual journey exploring
the gap between our physical surroundings and
the thoughts we use to perceive them, through
the paintings of Sarah Kogan and Gemma Hodge.
Sarah Kogan uses
subtle and understated imagery to create
an enigmatic, unsettling stillness,
evoking journeys towards empty horizons or
across dense seas. The paintings are concerned
with the immigrant’s passage to an unknown
and indecipherable world. Using naturalistic
colour and an emphasis on tone, the paintings
depict a reality with which we are all familiar,
leaving the viewer to contemplate themselves
and the landscape in solitude, wondering what
the future holds.
Gemma Hodge paints with a superb command of
light and atmosphere, placing the viewer in
a magical, timeless space firmly in the tradition
of Irish landscape painting but translated
to the British city. At times almost photographic,
her cityscapes are charged with a hazy air
that makes them soft, sensitive, and yet at
the same time intensely engaging. Originally
from Waterford, Gemma lives and works in London.
