Peter Michael`s paintings are large in every sense: big canvases, big real women, and a painterly approach that articulates all the carnal, visceral power of the raw human being. His figures feel monumental, solid and weighty, set in stark white contexts that accentuate their sculptural qualities – the paint drips round the figures, weathering them and aging them with colour. Firmly set in the British painting tradition of Lucian Freud and Jenny Saville, but referencing his classical Italian training with hints of artists such as Mantegna, Peter Michael is a most distinctive emerging British painter.
